History
Ken and Jean Hansen named their home and subsequently their foundation after the refuge for elves, hobbits, dwarfs, and wizards found in the imaginary world of J.R.R Tolkien. In Tolkien’s story, Bilbo the adventuresome hobbit and his companions came to Rivendell “and found its doors flung wide…[The] house was perfect whether you like food or sleep or work or storytelling or just sitting and thinking best or a pleasant mixture of them all…Their clothes were mended as well as their bruises, their tempers, and their hopes…Their plans were improved with the best advice.” Rivendell gave generously to overthrow the destructive powers of darkness and bring the light of healing and reconciliation. The story of Rivendell inspired Ken and Jean to express the generosity of Rivendell in their home. Their guests especially remember the warm hugs and cheerful service of their firstborn son, Kenny. The legacy of Ken, Jean and Kenny continues to motivate the trustees of Rivendell Stewards’ Trust, who are members of the Hansen family.
